Looking forward: Indigenous American students
Why indigenous American students?
Only 1% of college students in America are indigenous American. We want to change that. Our aim is to work hands-on with indigenous American students to offer college counseling and mentorship.
Advocacy
Meeting with college admissions counselors to talk about the potential of indigenous American students. Creating a partnership with a university to admit a cohort of 4-8 indigenous American students and commit to providing academic and social support. Focusing on students who wish to pursue degrees in the arts so that they can be given the tools and a platform in which to tell their stories.
Mentorship
Connecting students with funding opportunities (grants and scholarships) as well as opportunities offered by organizations such as SACNAS, Outward Bound, AISES, NCAI, CNAY, and others. Coaching them with their college applications. Liaising between applicants and college admissions departments to explain cultural differences. Creating petitions as needed to address inequities.
Methods
Establishing a relationship with no more than 4 schools on indigenous American reservations and one college partner. Recruiting and mentoring students. Traveling between communities to work with students in person while also maintaining communication digitally.
